Hi, I'm Pei, a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer. Over the past few years I've photographed many growing families across Melbourne, and one conversation comes up time and time again: "Where can I actually take my newborn?" This guide is a collection of places I've recommended to clients, along with some of my own favourite spots.
Life with a newborn is equal parts peaceful, exhausting, and magical. One minute you're staring at this tiny person wondering how you made them, the next you're googling "places to go with newborn Melbourne" at 2am because the walls of your living room have started to feel very small.
But then comes another thought: Is it even worth leaving the house? For many new mums, that first outing can feel surprisingly daunting. Packing nappies, wipes, spare clothes, bottles or feeds, wrestling the pram into the car, hoping bub doesn't start crying the moment you arrive, and wondering whether you'll find somewhere that's actually baby-friendly. It can feel like an expedition for what used to be a simple coffee run. The good news is, it does get easier. And sometimes, getting out for an hour, breathing in some fresh air, and seeing the world beyond your four walls can do wonders for both you and your baby.
Shopping centres with proper parent rooms
When you're venturing out with a newborn for the first few times, shopping centres are honestly one of the easiest places to start. Everything you need is under one roof. You can grab a coffee or lunch, wander the shops at your own pace, duck into a parents' room when bub needs a feed or nappy change, and if you're lucky, even find a little play area for an older sibling. There's no pressure to have a plan or destination. Sometimes, it's simply about getting out of the house.
A well-designed parents' room can make all the difference to your confidence as a new mum. Knowing there's somewhere comfortable to feed your baby, change nappies, or take a moment if things don't go to plan makes leaving the house feel just that little bit less overwhelming.
If you're in the CBD, Melbourne Central is home to the Parents' Retreat on Level 2, highly rated by the Australian Breastfeeding Association. It includes private feeding cubicles, change tables, a microwave, and a small play space for older children. Nearby, Emporium Melbourne also offers a thoughtfully designed parents' room on Level 3, including a small play station that's especially handy if you're juggling both a newborn and a toddler.
Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong is another favourite, with parent rooms on all three levels featuring private feeding rooms, change stations, microwaves, and play areas complete with TVs to keep older siblings entertained.
If you're heading to Chadstone, you'll find multiple parent rooms on the Ground Level and Level 2, each with private feeding spaces and comfortable seating that feels far more welcoming than trying to feed your baby in a food court or restroom.
For families in Melbourne's west, Pacific Werribee and Point Cook Town Centre both have well-equipped parent rooms, making them easy local options when you simply want to get out for an hour or two. If you're in the north, Northland Shopping Centre in Preston is another reliable choice.
One tip before you head out: if you're visiting a shopping centre for the first time, it's worth checking what facilities are available. The Australian Breastfeeding Association's Baby Care Room map is a fantastic resource for finding centres with parent-friendly facilities across Melbourne.
Coffee with bub (without feeling rushed)
Those first café visits can feel surprisingly nerve-racking. You wonder where you'll park the pram, whether bub will wake up crying just as your coffee arrives, and if everyone in the café will turn around to look. The truth is, most people are far kinder than we imagine. Choosing the right café simply gives you one less thing to worry about. Look for places with plenty of room for your pram, comfortable seating, a relaxed atmosphere, and good coffee. Sometimes, getting out of the house for a simple coffee is exactly what both you and your baby need.
If you've got an older toddler as well, or you're catching up with a friend whose little one is already on the move, then cafés with play spaces can make the outing even more enjoyable. While your newborn naps peacefully in the pram or your arms, the older kids have somewhere safe to burn off some energy, and everyone gets to enjoy a slower, more relaxed catch-up.
Here are a few toddler-friendly cafés and play cafés around Melbourne that are well worth visiting.
Origami Play Cafe (Kew) offers a beautifully designed Japanese-inspired play space alongside quality coffee and a Japanese-inspired menu. Children can enjoy imaginative play in a thoughtfully curated indoor environment, making it a lovely destination if you're meeting friends with little ones.
Dancing Dandelion is a favourite among local families thanks to its excellent coffee, freshly prepared café meals and bright indoor play space. Their philosophy is simple: adults deserve a great café experience too, making it a place where both parents and children can genuinely enjoy themselves.
Little Teapot Café & Play is worth the short drive from Melbourne's west. This not-for-profit family café combines a welcoming café with a spacious indoor play area and outdoor play spaces, making it an easy place to spend a relaxed morning.
Closer to home, Cheeky Chewies is a popular option in the west, with an indoor play area built right into the café, while Eden O' Bean Café offers a cosy local atmosphere with a small indoor play space. Hidden behind a nursery, The Feasting Shed is another local gem, complete with a kids' corner, peaceful garden setting and plenty of space for prams.
The best part? Whether your newborn sleeps through the whole outing or decides it's the perfect time to demand a feed, you're in a place where families are expected, welcomed, and understood.
Beautiful places for a pram walk in Melbourne.
Sometimes, the best outing doesn't involve a destination at all. There were days when all I needed was some fresh air, a change of scenery, and twenty minutes away from the same four walls. A pram walk can be incredibly grounding during those early newborn weeks. There's no pressure to keep anyone entertained, no timetable to follow, and if your little one falls asleep, you can simply keep walking and enjoy the peace. Melbourne is full of beautiful places that are perfect for a gentle stroll with a pram.
If you're in the west, Werribee Park offers wide pathways, beautiful gardens and plenty of open space to wander at your own pace. Point Cook Coastal Park is another lovely option if you'd like some fresh sea air, while Newport Lakes Reserve provides peaceful walking trails surrounded by nature.
Closer to the city, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne is one of the best places for a slow morning walk. The paths are pram-friendly, there are plenty of shady spots to stop for a feed, and the scenery changes with every season. If you're after something a little shorter, Albert Park Lake is another favourite, with wide footpaths, plenty of cafés nearby and easy parking.
The best part about a pram walk is that there's nothing you need to achieve. It doesn't matter if you walk for an hour or just fifteen minutes before heading home. Some days, simply getting dressed, stepping outside, and feeling the sun on your face is more than enough.
Melbourne baby classes, mums' groups and a little grown-up conversation
One thing nobody really tells you about the newborn stage is just how lonely it can feel. Your days revolve around feeds, naps and nappy changes, and before you know it, you've gone three days without having a proper conversation with another adult. Sometimes, getting out of the house isn't really for your baby at all—it's for you.
One of the best places to start is your local Maternal and Child Health service. Most councils across Melbourne run free first-time parents' groups, where you'll meet other mums whose babies are around the same age as yours. If you haven't been invited to one yet, ask your Maternal and Child Health nurse at your next appointment. Many lifelong friendships begin in these groups.
If you're looking for a regular activity each week, Baby Sensory classes are a wonderful option. Designed specifically for babies from birth to 13 months, each class is filled with music, gentle movement, lights, textures and sensory play that supports your baby's development while giving you a chance to meet other parents. No two sessions are the same, which makes it something to look forward to each week.
If you're hoping to move your body again after birth, Mums & Bubs Yoga is another lovely way to ease back into exercise. Classes are gentle, welcoming and designed around the reality that babies will cry, feed, need cuddles or fall asleep halfway through. Maternal & Infant Wellbeing Melbourne in Parkville offers dedicated Mum & Bub yoga classes from around six weeks until your baby starts crawling, combining postnatal yoga with bonding activities for you and your little one.
Don't overlook your local library, either. Libraries across Melbourne, including Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, and Melbourne City run free Baby Rhyme Time sessions throughout the week. Your newborn might not be clapping or singing along just yet, but they're soaking up new sounds, voices and faces. More importantly, it's another reason to get out of the house, meet other parents and remind yourself that you're not doing this alone.
Before it changes again
If there's one thing I've learnt from photographing hundreds of families, it's this: the days feel long, but the season is incredibly short. Right now, it might feel like life revolves around feeds, naps, laundry and wondering if you'll ever drink a hot coffee again. But one day, you'll look back and realise these were the moments that quietly became your memories.
The way your baby curls perfectly into your chest. Their tiny fingers wrapped around yours. The sleepy stretches, milk-drunk smiles, and the way they fit so effortlessly in your arms. These little details change far sooner than we expect. That's one of the reasons I love being a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer. It's not just about creating beautiful images. It's about preserving the tiny details that deserve to be remembered long after they've disappeared.
If you're based in Melbourne and you've been thinking about documenting this chapter, I'd be honoured to help you tell your family's story. Whether it's during pregnancy, those precious newborn weeks, or as your little one grows through their first year, my sessions are relaxed, baby-led and centred around capturing your family just as you are.
And if you're not quite ready yet, that's okay too. For now, I hope this guide helps you feel a little more confident about getting out into Melbourne with your little one. One coffee, one pram walk, one tiny adventure at a time.
