Pregnancy is often described as a beautiful season. And, it is. But it’s also a season that can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable, emotional, and quietly heavy in ways people don’t always talk about. If you’re pregnant right now, here’s something you might need to hear:
Be gentle with yourself.
As a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, I meet so many women in this season of life and behind the glowing photos you see, there are real stories, real emotions, and real struggles that deserve just as much space.
The Pressure to “Enjoy Every Moment”
You’ve probably heard it before:
“Enjoy it while it lasts.”
“You’ll miss this.”
“Pregnancy is such a special time.”
And while that can be true… it can also feel frustrating when:
- You’re exhausted before the day even begins
- Your body doesn’t feel like your own
- You’re struggling with nausea, aches, or poor sleep
- Your emotions feel all over the place
You might find yourself thinking,
“Why am I not enjoying this more?”
But the truth is, you can be grateful and still find it hard. Both can exist at the same time.
The Quiet Mental Load No One Talks About
Pregnancy isn’t just physical. It’s mental. It’s the constant thinking:
- Are they growing okay?
- Am I eating the right things?
- Should I be doing more… or less?
- How is life going to change after this?
And then there’s everything else you’re still carrying:
- Work responsibilities
- Family expectations
- Preparing the home
- Planning for a completely new chapter of life
It’s a lot. And yet, many women brush it off like it’s “just part of it.”
When Your Body Feels Unfamiliar
One of the most common things I hear from expecting mums is this:
“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
Your body is changing quickly. Clothes don’t fit the same. Simple things feel harder. Even looking in the mirror can feel… unfamiliar. And while there is so much beauty in what your body is doing, it doesn’t mean you instantly feel confident or comfortable in it. You’re allowed to take time to adjust. You’re allowed to have days where you don’t love how you feel.
Slowing Down Isn’t Falling Behind
In a world that celebrates productivity, slowing down can feel uncomfortable.
You might feel guilty for:
- Needing more rest
- Cancelling plans
- Not being as “on top of things” as you used to be
But your body is doing something extraordinary, even when it looks like you’re doing “nothing.” Growing a human is not small work. Rest is not laziness. Slowing down is not failure. It’s necessary.
Giving Yourself Grace
Being gentle with yourself doesn’t have to be something big or dramatic.
It can look like:
- Letting go of the pressure to “have it all together”
- Ordering takeout instead of cooking when you’re too tired
- Taking a nap without guilt
- Saying no to plans when your body needs rest
- Not comparing your pregnancy to someone else’s
Some days will feel easier than others. Some days you’ll feel strong, excited, connected. Other days you’ll feel tired, emotional, and unsure. Both are part of the journey.
These Moments Matter, Even the Messy Ones
It’s easy to think that only the “perfect” moments are worth remembering. The glowing skin. The styled outfits. The neatly planned milestones.
But often, it’s the in-between moments that tell the real story:
- The way you hold your belly without even thinking
- The quiet pauses during your day
- The softness in how you’re already caring for someone you haven’t met yet
As a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, I believe these are the moments worth holding onto too, not just how it looked, but how it felt.
You are allowed to:
- Feel excited and overwhelmed at the same time
- Love your baby deeply and still struggle some days
- Take this at your own pace
You are not behind. You are not doing it wrong. You are growing, adjusting, and becoming, in your own way. And that is more than enough.
Whether you’re in your first trimester or nearing the end, this chapter of your life is one you’ll never quite experience the same way again. If you’ve been thinking about documenting this season, I’d love to help you capture it in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and true to you.
