There’s something beautifully tender about those early days of heading out with your baby for the first time. Your heart is full. Your arms are a little fuller. And your bag? Likely bursting with everything just in case. As a Melbourne newborn and family photographer—and a mum myself—I know those first few outings can feel like packing for a week-long holiday. You want to be ready for anything, but also not carry the whole nursery on your shoulder. So here’s a practical list to help new or expecting mums feel a little more prepared (and a little less overwhelmed) for a typical day out in Melbourne with your baby.

My Favourite Baby Bag Essentials

1. Nappies (at least 3–4)

Melbourne weather can be unpredictable, but so can nappy changes. Better to be overprepared—always pack a few extras.

2. Water based wet wipes + Disposable Nappy Bags

From sticky hands to nappy clean-ups to wiping a café table, wipes are your best friend.

3. Change Mat

Public changing tables aren’t always baby-soft OR clean. A portable, foldable mat gives your little one a clean space anywhere.

4. Spare Clothes (for both of you)

Milk spills, unexpected blowouts, sudden drizzles—have a spare onesie for baby and a top for yourself, just in case.

5. Feeding Supplies

Whether you’re breastfeeding, pumping or bottle feeding, pack what you need: a muslin cloth, bib, bottles, or snacks for older bubs.

6. Dummy or Comfort Item

A familiar item can soothe your little one in new or busy places—especially helpful in cafes, parks, or during your family photo session.

7. Swaddle or Wrap

Perfect for warmth, sun protection, or creating a little privacy while feeding. I love muslin wraps for their lightness and versatility.

8. Hand Sanitiser

Especially when you’re out and about touching surfaces or changing bub on the go.

9. Baby Carrier or Light Blanket

If bubdozes off, you’ll want something cozy. I often see parents use this during sessions too—it helps little ones feel safe and snuggled.

10. A Little Something for You

A granola bar, lip balm, water bottle. Don’t forget yourself—you’re doing so much, and you matter too.

From One Mum to Another...

If this is your first time preparing for a full outing, be kind to yourself. It might take a few tries to find your rhythm—but it gets easier. Melbourne is full of beautiful, family-friendly spots—from quiet parks to cafés with change tables and comfy nooks for feeding. Whether you’re heading to your first baby class or out for coffee with a friend, know that just getting out the door is a small, quiet triumph.

And if you’re thinking about a session to capture this fleeting season—those tiny hands, that quiet bond—I’d love to help tell that story.

I offer gentle, natural sessions as a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, with a baby-led approach and a calm, supportive atmosphere.

Let’s create images that honour where you are now—nappy bag, snack crumbs, and all.
