Anniversaries are personal. Some couples mark the day with champagne and fine dining; others prefer a night in with takeaway and a good movie. There's no "right" way to celebrate—just your way. If you're in Melbourne and wondering how to celebrate your anniversary in a way that feels fresh, meaningful, and true to your relationship, here are a few ideas that skip the clichés and lean into connection, fun, and intention.
1. Recreate Your First Date—with a Twist
Whether it was a coffee in Carlton, a movie at The Astor, or tacos in Fitzroy—revisit the memory. But this time, add something new. Maybe write each other a letter beforehand, dress up for fun, or end the night with something spontaneous (like karaoke or dessert at midnight).
It’s not about being perfect—it’s about remembering where it started and celebrating how far you’ve come.
2. Do a “No Phones” Day and Be Tourists in Your Own City
Melbourne is full of quiet corners and unexpected magic. Spend the day exploring a suburb you’ve never wandered together—Brunswick’s vintage stores, the Dandenongs' trails, a slow lunch in the Yarra Valley.
No emails. No scroll. Just you, your person, and the city you call home.
3. Book a Couple Shoot to Celebrate the Season You’re In
One of the most underrated ways to honour your anniversary?
Documenting it.
You don’t have to be engaged or newlywed to have your story captured. Whether you’ve been together 2 years or 20, a couple shoot is a chance to pause, reflect, and create something beautiful to look back on.
Many of the couples I work with say their session gave them space to reconnect—slow down, laugh, and just be. And the photos? A love letter to the life you're building.
📸 As a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, I specialise in capturing real, heart-filled connection—no stiff posing or awkward smiles. Just the two of you, as you are.
4. Plan a Low-Key Staycation (Bonus: It Can Be Local)
You don’t need to head to the coast or hop on a flight. A night at a boutique hotel in the city or a cute Airbnb 30 minutes out can do wonders. Bring your favourite snacks, create a shared playlist, and soak in the slowness.
Bring a film camera. Order breakfast in bed. Watch the sunrise together.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need.
5. Create a Time Capsule Together
On your anniversary, take time to write down a few things:
- What you’re most proud of this year
- What made you laugh the hardest
- What you're dreaming about for the future
Seal it up and tuck it away for next year—or for your five-year anniversary. These little details are what make your story rich.
Celebrate Your Way
At the end of the day, it’s not about the grand gestures—it’s about feeling seen, safe, and celebrated by the one you love. However you choose to mark the moment, let it reflect you.
And if part of that celebration includes capturing your love in a way that feels natural and meaningful, I’d love to be part of it.
