The Ultimate Guide to In-Home Newborn Photography: When to Book and What to Expect
By Pei Aui – Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer
Welcoming a newborn into your family is a joyous occasion filled with love and unforgettable memories. One of the best ways to capture this fleeting time is through professional newborn photography, especially when it takes place in the comfort of your own home. Here’s everything you need to know about when to book, what to expect, and tips for making the most of your at-home photography experience.
When to Book Your Newborn Photography Session
**Timing is Key:**
The ideal time for newborn photography is within the first two to four weeks after birth. This period, often referred to as the "newborn stage," allows for those adorable curled-up poses as babies tend to be sleepy, calm and flexible during this time.
**Planning Ahead:**
To ensure you secure your spot, it’s best to book your session while you’re still pregnant. Many photographers recommend reaching out during the second or third trimester. This advance booking allows me to set aside time for you around your due date, accommodating the unpredictability of childbirth.
What to Expect During Your In-Home Newborn Photography Session
**The Session Setup:**
When I arrive at your home, I’ll create a warm and inviting environment to help soothe your little one. I’ll bring a variety of blankets, pillows, and backdrops, usually in neutral colours of white, or soft pink. I also have a few baby girl headbands if you don't have any on hand. During colder months, it is advisable to have the heater turned on so that baby is nice and comfortable.
**Duration of the Session:**
My in-home newborn sessions typically last about 1 hour. This timeframe allows for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. My goal is to keep your baby comfortable and relaxed so that we can capture the best images possible.
**Posing and Safety:**
Your baby’s safety is my top priority. I will use gentle posing techniques and never place your little one in any positions that could be unsafe.
Tips for a Successful In-Home Newborn Photography Session
1. **Feeding Before the Shoot:**
A well-fed baby is often a happy baby. Try to feed your newborn just before the session. A full tummy will help them sleep through many of the poses.
2. **Dress Comfortably:**
Both you and your baby should wear comfortable clothing. If you plan to be in some family shots, consider wearing soft, neutral colors that complement your baby’s outfits.
3. **Create a Cozy Space:**
Before I arrive, choose a comfortable area in your home with good natural light—like a well-lit living room or bedroom. This will help set the stage for beautiful photos.
4. **Bring Essentials:**
Have some essentials such as diapers, wipes, pacifiers, and any comfort items your baby loves. Having these items on hand can help soothe your newborn during the shoot.
5. **Stay Calm:**
Newborns can sense stress, so try to relax! If your baby becomes fussy, I will work with you to soothe them and capture images at their pace.
6. **Personal Touches:**
Feel free to incorporate meaningful items from your home, such as family heirlooms, favorite toys, or outfits that reflect your family’s personality. These personal touches will make your photos even more special.
7. **Plan for After the Shoot:**
After the session, allow some time for yourself and your baby to unwind. You’ll likely be tired, so consider planning a quiet day at home to relax and enjoy those first few days together.
In-home newborn photography is a beautiful way to celebrate the arrival of your little one and create lasting memories without the stress of traveling. By planning ahead and knowing what to expect, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
