Most couples don't skip engagement photos because they don't want them. They skip them because they don't realise what they're actually for until it's too late to go back.

This article is for the couple who just got engaged and is figuring out what comes next. It's also, for the person who is planning a proposal in Melbourne right now, and is wondering whether to keep the photographer around a little longer. Both of you are going to want to read this.

The engagement period is shorter than you think

The average Australian engagement lasts somewhere between 12 and 18 months. That sounds like a lot until you factor in the venue research, the family dinners where everyone has an opinion, the dress appointments, the cake tastings, the seating chart that takes three weeks longer than it should, and the general reality that wedding planning quietly absorbs every available weekend. Before you know it, you're six weeks out from the wedding and someone asks if you ever did engagement photos and the answer is no, you kept meaning to, and now the moment has genuinely passed.

The engagement period is its own chapter. Not a waiting room for the wedding. An actual chapter. And like most chapters in life, you only notice how short it was once it's over.

What engagement photos actually give you

Here's what most people don't realise until they're deep into wedding planning. Engagement photos aren't just nice to have. They're working images.

Your save the dates need a photo. Your wedding website needs a photo. Your announcement post, the one that isn't just a ring balanced on someone's hand, needs a photo. And if you want those images to look like the two of you at your best, in a location that means something, shot by someone who knows what they're doing, you need to plan for that session before life gets too busy.

Beyond the practical side, there's something else. The engagement period has its own energy. You're newly together in a new way. You're excited and a little overwhelmed and deeply happy in a way that is specific to this moment. Photos from right now will look different from photos taken a year from now, when the wedding is a week away and you've been planning it for 14 months.

Some Melbourne couples choose to do their engagement session at the location where the proposal happened, if it's somewhere meaningful. Others choose a favourite spot around Melbourne, a bayside location, a park in the western suburbs, somewhere that feels like them. Either way, those photos become something you'll return to long after the wedding is done.

As a Melbourne couples photographer, some of my favourite sessions are engagement sessions. There's no ceremony timeline. No family to wrangle. Just the two of you, a beautiful Melbourne location, and a hour or two to actually enjoy being engaged.

For the one planning a Melbourne proposal right now: the part nobody talks about

If you are planning a surprise proposal, you've already done the hard part. You thought of the location, managed the timing, chosen the ring.

Here's something worth knowing. If you hired a Melbourne proposal photographer for the moment itself, you can keep them for what comes right after.

A lot of the surprise proposal sessions I photograph in Melbourne flow directly into an engagement session. The proposal happens, your partner says yes, the initial emotion settles, and then we spend the next hour or so shooting the two of you as an engaged couple. Same location, same light, same photographer who already knows how the day is going.

You go home with photos from the proposal and photos from the celebration after it. The whole thing, documented properly.

She gets to see the moment she said yes and the moments right after it, when you were both just standing there being newly engaged and happy and slightly disbelieving. Those images are different from anything you'd get in a planned session later.

The camera comfort thing is real

There's another reason Melbourne couples who do engagement sessions are glad they did, and it's one that rarely gets talked about honestly.

Most people are not naturally comfortable in front of a camera. Not because there's anything wrong with them. Just because it's a slightly strange thing to do and most of us don't practice it. Your wedding day is not the time to figure out how to stand, where to look, what to do with your hands, or how to actually kiss your partner without thinking about the fact that someone is photographing you doing it. An engagement session gives you a low-pressure version of that experience first. By the time your wedding day arrives, you're not strangers to the process. You know how it feels. You know the photographer. You relax faster, which means you look better, which means the photos are better.

It's a small thing that makes a meaningful difference.

A note on timing

Engagement sessions in Melbourne book out faster than most couples expect, especially for golden hour slots in spring and early summer. If you're planning to use the photos for save the dates, work backwards from when you want to send them and make sure you've allowed enough time for the session, the editing, and the printing.

As a general rule, if you want engagement photos done properly and without rushing, book within the first two to three months of getting engaged. Earlier if your wedding is within the year.
