By Pei Aui – Melbourne Newborn, Maternity, Family and Couples Photographer

If you’ve ever looked at a photo and thought, “How does the light look this soft and golden?” — you’re not alone. It’s not a filter or post-editing magic. It’s timing. As a Melbourne-based photographer, I get asked this all the time: “When’s the best time to book our shoot for that dreamy light?”

Let’s break it down simply — so you can feel confident booking your next family, maternity, or couples session at just the right time.

Golden Hour: The Crowd Favourite

Golden hour is that magical time just after sunrise and just before sunset — when the light is soft, warm, and unbelievably flattering. It wraps you in a golden glow, smooths out harsh shadows, and adds a dreamy, romantic feel to every photo.

In Melbourne, golden hour timing varies by season. Here’s a helpful guide:

☀️ Golden Hour Guide – Melbourne

Summer 6:00am–7:00am; 7:30pm–8:30pm

Autumn 7:00am–8:00am; 5:30pm–6:30pm

Winter 7:30am–8:30am; 4:30pm–5:30pm

Spring 6:30am–7:30am; 6:00pm–7:00pm

📌 Morning golden hour tends to be quieter and cooler — perfect for early risers, beach or city sessions, couples or serene maternity sessions.

📌 Evening golden hour brings that rich, golden warmth — ideal for couples, families with little ones, beach shoots, and soft sunset cuddles.

Soft Morning Light: Underrated but Beautiful

Morning sessions have their own kind of magic. Light around 6:30am–9am is gentle and diffused, especially if there’s light cloud cover.

It’s perfect for:

  • Families with little ones (who are early risers anyway!)
  • Crisp, fresh looks at the park or gardens
  • Avoiding crowded public spaces

Plus, you’re done and dusted before your day even starts — coffee in hand and memories made.

In-Home Sessions: No Need to Chase the Sun

When you’re booking an in-home session — especially for newborns or maternity — we can work with indirect natural light from your windows any time between 10am and 2pm.

You don’t need perfect lighting or a spotless home. I guide you through the best spots and angles, making the most of the natural light you already have.

💡 Bonus: You can pause to breastfeed, cuddle, or have a snack. It’s your real life, beautifully told.

Pro tip: Great option for winter family and couples sessions.

So, What’s the Right Time for You?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I love the glow of sunset or the softness of morning?
  • Will my kids be happier in the morning or evening?
  • Do I want an outdoor session or cozy at home?
  • Am I available on weekdays when locations are quieter?

When we chat, I help you pick a time that works for both light and your lifestyle — so your session feels natural and relaxed.
