By Pei Aui – Melbourne Newborn, Maternity, Family and Couples Photographer

Let’s face it: getting the whole family to smile at the same time can feel like herding caffeinated kittens—especially when toddlers are involved. But here’s the good news: as a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, I’m here to let you in on a secret—family photo day doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can be downright fun (yes, really!).

Whether you’re wrangling a wiggly two-year-old or convincing your teenager to put down their phone, these simple tips will have you feeling confident, relaxed, and ready to capture some magic.

1. Let’s Lower the Stakes (Perfection Is Overrated)

Here’s a little secret: the best family photos aren’t the ones where everyone’s looking perfectly polished and posed. They’re the ones that show real connection—like the giggles between siblings or the sweet snuggles with mum and dad. So take a deep breath, mama. Let the kids be themselves, and trust that we’ll capture the beauty in those candid, in-between moments.

2. Dress for Comfort (and a Little Fun)

Matching outfits? Adorable. But only if everyone feels good in them! Choose clothes that you’re comfortable moving in—especially for the littlest ones. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and earthy tones photograph beautifully and let your natural vibe shine. Bonus tip: avoid neon colours and busy patterns; they can steal the spotlight from your sweet family connection.

3. Timing is Everything

We all know toddlers have their own schedules (and it usually doesn’t involve sitting still for long!). Let’s work with that. I love shooting during the magical “golden hour” just before sunset—it’s soft, flattering, and warm, perfect for those dreamy family shots.

It’s also super important to avoid nap times and snack times—because a well-rested, well-fed little one is a much happier little one! No one knows your kiddos like you do, so trust your instincts on when they’re at their best. We’ll plan around their rhythms, not ours.

Plus, if someone does get a bit wiggly or tired, don’t worry—I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep things fun and relaxed. Together, we’ll make sure everyone’s in the mood for some beautiful, natural photos.

4. Embrace the Chaos

Repeat after me: it’s okay if the kids aren’t perfectly still. In fact, those bursts of wild energy often make for the most memorable photos! I’ll guide you through fun, relaxed prompts to keep things moving, so there’s no need to worry if someone’s having a wiggle or a wander. We’re here to capture real life—the good, the messy, and the utterly delightful.

5. Bring Snacks (and Bribes if Needed!)

Look, no judgment here—sometimes a well-timed snack can save the day. Bring along a favourite treat or two (just maybe not a red icy pole!), and let’s keep everyone feeling happy and cooperative. A little sugar rush goes a long way!
