Preparing for a family photo session is more than just choosing what to wear—it's about setting yourselves up for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. As a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer, I’ve worked with many families over the years, and one thing I’ve learned is this: the more comfortable and prepared you are, the more natural and meaningful your photos will feel. Here’s a practical guide to what to bring along on the day—so you can enjoy the moment and make the most of your session.
1. Comfortable, Timeless Outfits
Choose clothes that reflect your style but also photograph well. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and subtle textures work beautifully in outdoor and studio settings. Coordinating rather than matching gives a more relaxed and polished look.
For children, always pack at least one spare outfit—accidents happen, and it's great to have a clean backup just in case.
Tip: Lay out and prep outfits the night before so the morning is stress-free.
2. Snacks and Water
A small stash of mess-free snacks (think crackers, fruit slices, or cheese) and a bottle of water can be a lifesaver—especially for little ones. A quick snack break can help keep moods up and everyone happy.
Avoid chocolate or sticky lollies before photos—those can leave behind smudges and stains.
3. Comfort Items for Kids
If your child has a favourite toy or comfort item, feel free to bring it along. It can be helpful during the session and often adds a sweet, personal touch to the photos.
4. A Blanket or Wrap
Bringing a neutral-toned blanket is always a good idea, especially for outdoor sessions. It can be used for sitting, keeping warm, or creating cozy family shots. Plus, it’s nice to have something soft for young children to sit or lie on.
5. Touch-Up Basics
A small pouch with wipes, tissues, a hairbrush, and lip balm is often all you need. If you're doing maternity or family photos, a spare nappy and a small mirror can come in handy too. Keeping things simple means you won’t feel overwhelmed during the session.
6. Your Story & An Open Heart
I always tell my families: the most important thing you can bring is yourselves—just as you are. You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need your kids to sit still or smile on cue. You just need to be together. Laugh, play, hold each other close. The magic happens in between the poses—in the soft touches, the stolen glances, the way your child reaches for your hand without even thinking.
A Note From Me to You
Every photo session is more than just a booking—it’s a chapter in your story. Whether you’re celebrating a new life, growing your family, or simply wanting to preserve this season before it slips away, I’m here to help you hold onto it.
If you’re looking for a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family and couples photographer who sees the beauty in the quiet, honest moments—someone who wants to tell your story—then I’d love to hear from you.
Let’s make some memories.
