Motherhood is often painted in soft, joyful moments, the first smile, the first steps, the lullabies that make your heart swell. But beneath these snapshots of happiness lies a quieter reality, the mental load. It’s the invisible, constant planning, worrying, and organising that mothers carry every single day. From remembering who needs to be where, what needs to be bought, to when the next meal should happen, to noticing the little changes in moods, energy, or behaviour, these are things no one sees. Yet they shape our days and quietly weigh on our minds and hearts. And it’s not just the tasks. It’s the emotional labour too, the worry, the guilt, the “did I do enough today?” echoing late at night when the house is finally quiet. Every mother experience this mental load differently.

Mothers and Fathers carry different kinds of loads

When your baby is newborn or in their first year, the mental load is relentless. Timing feeds and naps and trying to sync them with life outside the nursery, preparing safe foods for first tastes, deciding what to pack for an outing or what your baby should wear to stay comfortable and happy, these things often fall on mothers. Not because partners don’t care, but because men and women support family life differently. Sometimes a simple list for feeding or a pre-packed “go bag” can make life feel a little lighter, and having a few extra snacks or meals ready in advance can take away the pressure of making decisions in the moment.

As children grow into the preschool and school years, the mental load shifts. Mothers often become the ones juggling enrolments, registrations, lunchboxes, remembering birthdays, parent-teacher meetings, appointments, and activity schedules. It can feel never-ending, but a little planning can make a difference. Using a shared family calendar or phone reminders, prepping snacks or lunches in batches over the weekend, or even letting children take small responsibilities for themselves can ease the burden just enough to breathe.

At the same time, fathers often carry their own load, usually in different ways. They might handle night feeds, carry the pram on long walks, lift toddlers who refuse to walk, or take children to school or activities. They may take care of household tasks or errands, keeping routines moving when mothers need a moment of rest. Their contributions are valuable, but they don’t erase the mental load that mothers carry. Recognising both sides isn’t about comparing or measuring, it’s just a way to acknowledge that parenting is shared in different ways, even when it doesn’t always feel equal.

Taking time for yourself

Even with planning, the mental load can feel heavy. It’s okay, and necessary, to take moments for yourself. A night out with your girlfriends, a quiet morning with a book, a walk in the park, or even just a solo coffee at a favourite café can feel like a small act of restoration. Doing something you love, without guilt, reminds you that you are more than your roles as a mother, partner, or carer. Partners can help create space for these moments simply by acknowledging they’re important. It’s not about who does more, but about remembering that mothers too deserve time to recharge, reconnect, and feel joy in their own way.

As a Melbourne newborn, maternity, family, and couples photographer, I get to witness these fleeting moments, the laughter, the tiny hands gripping fingers, the way a mother’s eyes light up when her children feel safe. These moments matter. They are worth capturing. They remind us that even in the busy, exhausting, unseen load, there is beauty. This Mother’s Day, consider celebrating yourself, or the mother in your life, with something that truly pauses time. My Mother’s Day mini sessions are designed to capture the love, connection, and quiet joy that often goes unnoticed. Every mother deserves to feel seen, cherished, and remembered. Spots for Mother’s Day mini sessions are limited, so if you’d like to capture a moment that tells your story, for now and for always, I would love to help.
